Disclaimer
Last updated: April 29, 2026
This disclaimer explains the limits of accuracy for everything published on pavingcalc.net. Read it before using any number from this site to commit money or sign a contract.
1. Estimation, not engineering
pavingcalc.net publishes estimation tools and educational guides. This site does not provide professional engineering, surveying, structural, or construction advice. If your project requires sealed engineering drawings or a licensed contractor signature, please hire one. Use of this site does not create any client-engineer relationship between you and pavingcalc, its founder, or its contributors.
2. Volume math is exact —quantity and cost are not
The geometric calculations (length × width × depth, etc.) are mathematically exact. The conversions to tons and dollars depend on assumptions that vary in the real world:
- Density —we default to 145 lb/ft³ (NAPA average for hot mix asphalt). Real mix designs range 140-150 lb/ft³, a 7% spread. Cold patch and recycled asphalt are even lower.
- Compaction —loose volume shrinks 15-20% when rolled. We bake this into the waste factor, but field conditions vary.
- Material price —defaults are 2026 industry averages from RSMeans and contractor invoices. Local pricing can swing 20-40% in either direction.
- Labor price —varies by union vs non-union markets, crew availability, and bid season.
- Hauling —we assume a 25-mile delivery radius. Long hauls can add $1-3 per ton per 10 miles.
- Site conditions —bad soil, drainage problems, or steep slopes can increase actual material need by 20% or more.
2a. Recommended accuracy bands
Treat the calculator output with these tolerances:
- Material quantity (tons / cubic yards): ±5% if your inputs are accurate. Always confirm against the supplier batch ticket.
- Project cost: ±15% under typical conditions, ±25% in markets with high local variance. Always get two written contractor quotes.
3. Always verify before purchase
- Confirm the actual mix density on your supplier's batch ticket (it's printed on every load)
- Get at least two written contractor quotes —bids more than 15% apart deserve scrutiny
- Verify base prep is itemized separately and not buried in "site work"
- Confirm your local code office's frost-line and structural minimums
- For commercial projects, verify ADA accessibility requirements with your building department
4. Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, pavingcalc, its founder, and its contributors are not liable for any costs, losses, delays, disputes, or damages arising from your use of the calculator output. The site is provided "AS IS" without warranty of any kind. See the full terms of service for the complete liability framework.
5. External sources
Where we cite NAPA, FHWA, AASHTO, ADA.gov, or RSMeans we link directly to the original source for verification. Industry data changes —the linked source is always more authoritative than our cached value. If you find a stale citation, please tell us and we'll fix it within 7 days.
6. AdSense disclosure
